As far as the competitors are concerned, the Murano Regatta is the most challenging of all the boat races held in the Venetian Lagoon. Surprisingly or not, the hub of the traditional glass production in the lagoon is, indeed, home, to this tough sailing race the difficulties of which are generated chiefly by the meandering canal which crisscrosses the island, requiring refined nautical skills from the competitors. As it is the case with most of the other regattas, women and the youngsters are allowed to row boats easier to handle (such as the traditional pupparini), whereas men must row one-oar gondolas.
